Bang on trend – 2018’s wedding dress styles

Choosing a wedding dress is one of the most important decisions a bride has to make – after all, every girl wants to feel like a million dollars on her wedding day. But it can be difficult to know where to start; after all, how many times have you heard a bride say that the dress she ended up choosing was completely different to what she originally had in mind?

If your big day is set for 2018 and you’re about to start dress shopping, take a look at some of the latest looks from this year’s Bridal Fashion Week for inspiration. Big names such as Oscar de la Renta, Monique Lhuillier and Marchesa all showcased some dazzling collections, so whether its ideas on the silhouette or options for details and embellishments that you’re looking for, here are some of the trends that you can expect to see next year.

Classic silhouettes

You can’t go wrong with a classic A-line or mermaid style gown. They are beautifully figure-enhancing for brides of all shapes and sizes, and this year’s catwalks certainly recognised that. Satin and silk faille featured prominently and, coupled with retro accessories or sheer gloves (also a hit this year), they make for a timeless look and some great photos.

Pearls and beading

These embellishments are nothing new to bridal fashion, but there’s one thing to take away from this year’s designs, it’s that less is not always more. Several collections feature streamlined dresses with pearls or beading across the whole gown, creating vintage-style glamour and extraordinary texture. If you want to keep the pearl or beaded element but a fully embellished dress isn’t for you, go for some detail across the bodice and accentuate with matching jewellery.

Bold black and bows

Looking to really make a statement when you walk down the aisle? The designers are going bold with black trim and big bows this year. While some have kept it simple, with just enough black to give their dresses an edgy feel, others have gone all out on mainly black gowns with some white or shimmer to give a that feeling of occasion.

Bows made a splash last season, but they’re staying on trend for 2018 and are even bigger. Teamed with a tailored silhouette and a simpler style, they add a modern, feminine touch.

Capes

Brides getting married in the cooler months might be relieved to know that capes appear in a number of collections . From lightweight, embroidered lace to more substantial designs, capes are bringing elegance and yes, in some instances warmth, to wedding fashion. Vera Wang, Savannah Miller and Lela Rose all featured them at this year’s Bridal Fashion Week.

Something blue

I mentioned black, but that isn’t the only colour gracing the catwalk this year. The traditional rhyme, ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” has made a playful entrance into the 2018 trends, with some stunning blue dresses hitting the runway. Pale hues and sheer fabrics give a real fairytale feel, while detailed embroidery lends sophistication to the look.something-blue-11-something-blue
